Agentic Commerce: Why Alipay’s AI Wallet is a Game-Changer for Fintech

If you feel like the fintech world is moving at breakneck speed, you’re not alone. Just when we finally got our heads around stablecoin settlement and real-time payment rails, the goalposts have shifted again.

This week, Alipay: the giant that essentially invented the modern mobile wallet: dropped a bombshell that is set to redefine how we think about "users" in the payments ecosystem. They’ve launched the world’s first AI Wallet and a developer-facing platform called Token Pay.

Why should you care? Because we are officially entering the era of Agentic Commerce.

In this world, your customer is no longer just a human with a thumb and a smartphone. Your customer is an AI agent. And if your fintech infrastructure isn't ready to talk to them, you're going to be left behind in the 2025s.

What is Agentic Commerce?

For the last decade, "automation" in payments meant recurring billing or "if-this-then-that" scripts. Agentic Commerce is a different beast entirely. It refers to an economy where AI agents: autonomous software entities: perform tasks, negotiate terms, and execute payments on behalf of users and businesses.

Think about it this way: instead of you going to a travel site, comparing flights, entering your card details, and clicking "pay," you simply tell your AI agent: "Find me a trip to Tokyo in September for under $2,000, book the most sustainable option, and handle the payment."

The AI agent then navigates the web, negotiates with airline APIs, verifies your preferences, and: this is the kicker: completes the transaction itself.

Alipay’s new suite is the first production-grade attempt to build the "plumbing" for this new reality. With over 100 million users already using their basic AI Pay service as of early 2026, they aren't just testing the waters; they're flooding the zone.

The AI Wallet: Giving Humans the Remote Control

One of the biggest hurdles for autonomous payments has always been trust. How do I know my AI hasn't gone rogue and bought me a fleet of Segways?

Alipay’s AI Wallet acts as the command centre for these agents. It lives inside the Alipay app and provides:

  • Visibility: A real-time log of what your agents are doing and what they intend to buy.

  • Control: The ability to set spending limits, approve specific high-value tasks, or revoke an agent’s "licence to spend."

  • Review: Post-transaction analysis that explains why an agent made a specific purchase decision.

For fintech founders, this is a massive hint at where the consumer UI is going. We are moving away from the "checkout button" and toward the "permissions dashboard."

Enter the Agentic Commerce Trust Protocol (ACTP)

You can't just have bots throwing money around without a set of rules. This is where the Agentic Commerce Trust Protocol (ACTP) comes in.

Alipay, in collaboration with the broader Alibaba ecosystem (including their Qwen AI models), has established ACTP as a "common language" for AI agents and service platforms. It solves the three big "Whos" of agentic payments:

  1. Who is the agent? (Verifiable identity)

  2. Who is the human behind it? (Binding the agent to a real user account)

  3. Who said it’s okay? (Cryptographic proof of intent and authorization)

This isn't just an Alipay thing. We’re seeing similar movements with Visa Direct’s new stablecoin capabilities and Mastercard’s "Verifiable Intent" frameworks. The industry is racing to standardise how an AI agent proves to a merchant that it has a legitimate mandate to spend money.

Token Pay: The Monetization Engine for AI

On the other side of the coin (pun intended) is Token Pay. This is Alipay’s "one-stop shop" for AI model companies like MiniMax and Stepfun.

Currently, AI companies struggle with complex global subscriptions and usage-based billing (the "token top-up" problem). Token Pay allows these companies to integrate payment flows directly into the AI’s logic.

If you are a developer building an AI agent, Token Pay is the rail that allows your agent to get "paid" for its work or to "pay" for the compute power it needs to finish a task. It’s a closed-loop system designed for the high-frequency, low-friction needs of the agentic economy.

Why This Matters for Your Merchant Strategy

If you are a fintech leader or a merchant service provider, the launch of the AI Wallet should be your wake-up call.

Most current merchant stacks are designed for human-interactive checkout. They require a browser, a redirect, a 3DS challenge, and a manual click. AI agents can’t: and won't: do that. They need "headless" checkout experiences.

To win in 2026 and beyond, your infrastructure needs to:

  • Accept Tokenized Mandates: Support payments that come with a "proof of intent" instead of a CVV code.

  • Support Asynchronous Settlement: AI agents might negotiate a price now but settle later based on task completion.

  • Integrate with Trust Protocols: Whether it’s Alipay’s ACTP or an open standard, you need to be able to verify that an incoming request is from a "Trusted Agent."
